Bethel Baptist Institutional Church Jacksonville, Florida

“The Our V.O.T.E. trainings and manual continue the legacy of social justice activism through the African American Church. As we continue to advance God's vision of peace, community, and overcoming racial and economic injustice, it is important that we teach people of faith how to be engaged in the pursuit of their own liberation."

HOW DOES OUR V.O.T.E. TRAINING WORK

Our V.O.T.E. is a faith community based ecumenical and culturally diverse voter engagement program that works with local and national faith-based grassroots organizations as well as houses of worship.

OBJECTIVES

The goals of Our V.O.T.E. are to:

·          Provide a framework for collaboration across various constituencies

·          Engage faith leaders in communities of faith as well as grassroots interfaith issue advocacy organizations in joint efforts to train and educate their constituents

·          Increase the capacity of faith-based organizations to provide training and technical assistance to their constituents.

·          Increase knowledge in the faith-based community regarding local and national issues relevant to the community.

TRAINING DELIVERY

Our V.O.T.E. utilizes a “train-the-trainers” (T3) model to organize trainings with the faith based community. The T3 model will train liaisons from each Organization/Church, who in turn, train their leadership and other faith-based organizations and churches in their network.

Our V.O.T.E. trainings increased the capacity in communities of faith to engage in the work of grassroots organizing, voter registration, and also enhanced their overall understanding of the political process and their role.  Training leads to more effective issue education, voter registration and GOTV efforts as congregations acquire the tools to develop a plan of execution and the ability to implement that plan.

Rev. Derrick Harkins
Dr. Derrick Harkins, Pastor
Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, Washington, DC
Board Member, World Relief

“The step by step accessibility of the Our V.O.T.E. manual breaks new ground in the realm of grass-roots and community organizing. It is exciting to think of how many groups and individuals will be encouraged in their efforts by this much-needed work.”

"Rev. Tune:
Your seminar on today was a true blessing to me as a pastor.  You helped me to see some missing pieces in my congregation. I believe that God would have His church to minister to the 'whole' person. I plan within the next few days to work on a Justice Ministry within our church. I enlist your prayers as we go forth. Once again, thanks a million!"
